about
This song is about me pacing around between the ‘warm light’ of my piano room and the other rooms in my house (cool light), overthinking everything ever. Every couple of lines is written about someone I was thinking about at the time (including my dog with a broken foot).
Was alone at home for a couple of weeks, feeling really tired all the time, running over the decisions I had made to lead to this point of guilty aimless pacing around the house. Not a breakup song! Although the second verse is me being bitter and sarcastic about a recent breakup at that time. Feeling really guilty about hurting people when I had no intention to hurt them. ‘I hope you like my lack of intention.’
Simple song (2 chords, inspired by droning repeating piano tracks on LCD Soundsystem's ‘All My Friends’) that really builds and expands into a full mesh of all these parts swimming around my head overlapping.
Tracked/Recorded all the parts myself on one microphone at home. Precarious mic setup above my upright piano, recorded 8 textural piano parts that stack on top of each other that creates this big wall of thick texture. Recorded all the vocal parts in my room (in a shack).
Remote mixing and guitar by Jono Steer. Leigh Fisher on drums. Art by one of my best friends Ella Grainger, who one of the lines is about, ‘just like that you stuck around for ten' (years).
lyrics
Lyrics:
What did I do, I used to be in love with you
Writing at the table, don’t wanna wake the neighbours,
but if you’ll come over yeah I’ll still be here.
Falling asleep at five PM, my dog has hurt his foot again,
and just like that, you stuck around for ten.
What did I do, I used to be in love with you
Warm light to cool light, how do I write something you’d actually like?
I think I’m going to a vague destination,
I hope you’re sick of this chord progression,
I hope you like my lack of intentions.
What did I do, I used to be in love with you.
I never told you how much
I really missed your touch
But now we’re talking I can’t, can’t get the words out
Can’t get the words out
Though it was only few times
Couldn’t get you out of my mind
But now we’re talking I can’t, can’t get the words out
Can’t get the words out
What did I do?
Can’t get the words out (warm light to cool light)
I used to be in love with you.
Can’t get the words out (warm light to cool light)
